What causes melasma?

Melasma can most commonly be found on your nose, cheeks, above the upper lip, the forehead and chin. The two main causes of melasma are ultraviolet (UV) light and hormones. Melasma has often been found in those who take contraceptive pills that contain progesterone and oestrogen. Pregnant women are more likely than anyone to get melasma which may be due to increased levels of progesterone, oestrogen and melanocyte-stimulating hormones in the third trimester of pregnancy.
